Joint Press Release: The Future of CDHI Moves to UTSC

Apr 11, 2025

In partnership with the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), the Critical Digital Humanities Initiative (CDHI) is excited to announce that our important work will continue beyond June 2025.

Since 2021, CDHI has flourished as a tri-campus research initiative that bridges humanities’ emphasis on power and culture with the tools and analysis of digital technology to forge a new, generative paradigm of digital humanities (DH) scholarship.

As of July 1, 2025, this tri-campus initiative will transition into a new home at UTSC.

DH@UofT marks an exciting new step in the longstanding collaboration between CDHI and a range of UTSC campus partners and faculty.

In collaboration with the UTSC ’s Office of the Vice-Principal Research & Innovation (OVPRI), UTSC Digital Scholarship Unit (DSU, housed in the UTSC Library’s Department of Research and Digital Initiatives), and multidisciplinary pedagogical and praxis leaders at UTSC, this tri-campus initiative is deeply aligned with key strategic research priorities on the Scarborough campus, including UTSC Engage

DH@UofT will continue to develop tri-campus infrastructure and knowledge mobilization methods for leading publicly-engaged, critical, and creative research in Digital Humanities.

DH@UofT will integrate and evolve several flagship programs, including:

  • Visiting Scholars
  • An updated range of CDHI series including: Lightning Lunches, Praxis Workshops, Bi-Weekly Newsletter, and Annual Research Showcase
  • Jackman Humanities Institute (JHI)-UTSC DH faculty Fellows and Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Collaborative faculty research space
  • New and renewed opportunities involving core facilities status and the Digital Scholarship Unit at the UTSC Library.

As we embark upon this transition, we will share more information on the OVPRI website, CDHI website and newsletter (subscribe here).

CDHI received three years of funding from the University of Toronto’s Institutional Strategic Initiatives (ISI) Program (January 2021 to 30 April 2024), with an additional year of bridge funding for 2024-25. During this period, our work has been generously supported by UTSC, UTM, Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Information, and the Jackman Humanities Institute.

CDHI has built vital infrastructure and community to support innovative digital humanities and digital research creation projects invested in social transformation. A needed incubator for innovative humanities research, CDHI has developed a shared resource of highly qualified personnel with the creative and technical capacity to bring research to an engaged public.

In its new form as DH@UofT, the UTSC OVPRI and UTSC Library’s Digital Scholarship Unit (DSU) are excited to continue our work for the DH community, and to evolve new directions for Digital Humanities: at UTSC and across the tri-campus.
