The UTSC VP Research & Innovation is committed to supporting the full range of its scholars’ humanities, arts, and social science (HASS) research agendas and seeks to advance the work of those engaged in digital scholarship as well as collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Researchers in these fields have been early and dynamic adopters of new methodologies in humanities, arts, and social science research, including computational approaches, new media, collaborative methods, and research creation. The VP Research & Innovation recognizes the significant opportunities–and challenges–faced by humanities, arts, and social science (HASS) scholars doing leading-edge, technologically-enhanced research; their successes are vital to the dynamism of UTSC’s on-campus research cultures.
The UTSC VP Research & Innovation, in conjunction with the Critical Digital Humanities Initiative, invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited-Term) (Digital & Collaborative Research, HASS) to take a leadership role in managing this highly interdisciplinary research environment. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting humanities and social science researchers who focus on collaborative, digital scholarship, and coordinating related research collaborations across the humanities and social sciences at UTSC. The incumbent will report to the Vice-Principal Research & Innovation. This opportunity of a Research Associate (Limited Term) is a 2-year appointment and the anticipated start is in May 2022.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will work independently to:
- Promote UTSC as a base for interdisciplinary research collaborations involving humanities, arts, and social science researchers who focus on collaborative digital research;
- Run regular roundtables and workshops on interdisciplinary critical digital research topics;
- Facilitate introductions and connections between researchers working in collaborative and digital research;
- Facilitate new interdisciplinary research directions for humanities, arts and social science at UTSC, particularly in collaborative and critical digital research;
- Identify funding opportunities for collaborative digital researchers and facilitate application development, with faculty PIs and research teams;
- Be a point of connection between the Digital Scholarship unit at UTSC, the CDHI, and UTSC digital and collaborative HASS researchers;
- Assist faculty members in Knowledge Mobilization activities, such as producing and promoting research communications content highlighting ongoing faculty research projects;
- Organize, facilitate, and participate in tri-campus digital scholarship initiatives;
- In consultation with digital librarians, provide one-on-one and group consultancy to humanities, arts and social science researchers seeking to make use of infrastructure for digital scholarship in and beyond UTSC;
- Connect faculty researchers with IT to troubleshoot problems with digital scholarship tools, as they arise.
As an important member of the VP Research & Innovation portfolio, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the review and/or preparation of grant/award applications in support of critical digital humanities and social science research, and promotion of a wide range of UTSC research activities. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research mission of the campus, and specifically the initiatives of the Office of the VP Research & Innovation.
The incumbent will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence and will design, direct, execute, analyze and present in written and oral forms novel investigative studies that build on and/or take advantage of the incumbent’s academic expertise.
Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications):
Education:
PhD in a humanities or social science discipline.
Experience:
At least three (3) years’ research experience post-PhD graduation, with expertise in collaborative digital scholarship. Experience as a project/team lead required. Must demonstrate expertise in programming research spaces, and ability to lead and manage scholarly and non-scholarly projects.
Other:
Superior communication and organizational skills; self-motivated with an ability to multi-task; ability to work in a collaborative group; ability to lead a project and co-ordinate small teams of researchers.
