The Critical Digital Humanities Initiative (CDHI), a tri-campus research initiative funded by the University of Toronto’s Institutional Strategic Initiatives (ISI) program is pleased to announce a new online workshop in digital storytelling.
Digital storytelling is a growing approach to research creation and dissemination that emerged from feminist and disability culture as well as anti-colonial, anti-racist and Indigenous thought.
Traditionally, digital stories are 2-to-5-minute creative and autobiographical micro documentaries highlighting how inequities and modes of resistance are embedded in people’s lives. The affective dimension of digital stories lends to their impactful use as knowledge translation tools across disciplines and sectors.
The StoryCentre at UC Berkeley is the international hub and incubator for digital storytelling. CDHI is partnering with the StoryCentre to offer a digital storytelling workshop tailored to researchers interested in sharing their research findings in an engaging and creative short video form.
This workshop will provide:
- An online hands-on and open studio environment to develop the narrative and technical skills to create a 2–5-minute digital research story
- Trained facilitators to support you through the process of digital research storytelling from conception to completion
- Knowledge and experience in the cutting-edge and experimental method of digital research storytelling
- Peer-to-peer learning with a select group of tri-campus U of T researchers enrolled in this workshop
- Post-production consultative services from the CDHI Communications Strategist and team to help create a plan for disseminating your digital research story to relevant audiences.

- Tuesday evenings, for four weeks: May 9, May 16, May 23, May 30

Eligibility
Any U of T faculty member (including teaching stream and sessional faculty) may apply. Librarians interested in digital storytelling are also encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage applications from research teams that include postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
Application process
Faculty or Librarian team leads will submit applications via email to julia.grusonwood@utoronto.ca by 21 April 2023 at 16:00pm EST.
- Faculty members or Librarians: Please submit a 1-2 paragraph expression of interest describing your research project and interest in digital research storytelling.
- Please include the name of one graduate or postdoctoral trainee who will also participate in this workshop with them.
Adjudication
Members of the CDHI Exec Team will adjudicate applications. Results will be communicated by 26 April 2023.
